Yeah Christmas is okay, and Thanksgiving is a close second, but ask anyone who knows me, the Fourth of July wins out as my favorite holiday.
There’s just something about fireworks + sunshine + American pride that permeates my heart [and my stomach] with pure happiness. And how else would any red blooded American gal like myself ring in our independence than with burgers + beer + beaches.
The weekend was nothing short of perfect. I even managed to fit in a few KILLER workouts somewhere between the hotdogs + Heinekens. And although these sweat sessions helped ease my perpetual weekend food coma, I also started the workweek off with a detoxifying Spinach + Pistachio + Banana smoothie to get back on the healthy track.
HOW I SWEAT:
Having a boyfriend who’s a part-time athlete for a living definitely has its benefits. On days when I’m not quite sure how I want to break a sweat, he’s armed with an arsenal of killer workouts he’s more than willing to put me through.
Today I’m sharing his med ball + plate total body workout [side note: we did this on Friday + I am still sore]
I warmed up with a quick 3.5 miles on the treadmill:
25 mins @ 6.5 mph + 1 minute sprints @ 9 mph x5
Then the real fun began. All you need for this workout is 6, 8 + 10 lb. med balls and a 25 lb. plate.
MED BALL SET:
[do this set 3x with each med ball for a total of 9 sets]
-15 chest passes [back and forth counts as one rep]
-15 passes with squats
-15 alt. ax chops
[pyramid style: start at 10 reps and repeat with 9,8,7 etc. all the way down]
We even up’ed the ante a bit by finishing with a few Bosu ball squats — and let me be the first to tell you, these are WAY harder than they look.
And if Friday wasn’t enough, we woke up Sunday morning and did it all over again in the backyard — truly earning those [many…] beers + burgers.
WHAT I ATE:
Though the workouts helped, after a holiday weekend I always inevitably wake up Monday morning with a weekend food hangover. Don’t get me wrong, every savory bite of juicy burger was well worth it, but to get back on track, I started my morning with my new favorite detox smoothie: Spinach + Pistachio + Banana.
what you need:
-1 cup spinach
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 cup frozen mango
-1/4 cup crushed pistachios
-Squeeze of lemon juice
-Dash of cayenne pepper
-1/2 crushed ice
